Should I Count Calories?

Have you ever found yourself wondering WTF should I eat?? Nutrition is confusing. Or at least it seems that way. So many conflicting opinions! Should you eat fat, or not? 🤷 How much protein do you need? 🤷 Is sugar to blame for everything? 🤷What’s better for weight loss vegan or paleo? 🤷 SO MUCH NOISE. Which creates soooo much confusion.

One of the biggest food confusions is that all calories are created equal.

It’s a lie. I believed it too. When I had an eating disorder I counted calories and ensured I didn’t go above 1,000 a day. Could I eat a packet of crisps? Yes, absolutely. A packet of Walkers Lites has almost the same number of calories as an apple (so obvs I opted for the crisps over the apple). And a diet Pepsi has 0 calories. That would be a 100 calorie post-workout snack taken care. Yes, it contained a low number of calories, but it also had absolutely 0 nutrition. 🙄 Food is more than just calories.

  • It’s information that our cells need to function.
  • It’s information that our metabolism can use to either run efficiently or sluggishly trudge along.
  • There is no other activity that we do every day that has more power to change our biology than what we eat.
  • Every bite codes our biology, for better or worse.

Quality beats quantity. A fact that ‘counting calories’ doesn’t take into consideration.

“1000 calories from broccoli, has a completely different impact on our genetic expression than 1000 calories from gummy bears.” Dr Mark Hyman

Calories count, but we don’t need to count them.

So WTF should you eat??  Real whole nutrient and phytonutrient rich food:

  • Turns off inflammation
  • Increases antioxidant systems
  • Balances hormones and brain chemistry
  • Boosts detoxification
  • Increases energy
  • Optimises our microbiome
  • Turns on disease-preventing, health-promoting genes.

Real foods like colourful vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, avocados, olives), gluten-free wholegrains, legumes, and plant protein (or responsibly sourced, organic animal proteins and fish) – all the foods that we recommend in the 30 Day Lifestyle Reset – will give your cells the information they need to function at their best. It will change your relationship with food, and your health. Nutrition isn’t complicated (or at least it doesn’t need to be). You already know that an 🍏 is going to serve you better than a packet of crisps, despite the almost equal number of calories, don’t you? 🤷 There’s no diet, magic pill, or exercise routine that’s going to improve your health more than following lifestyle changes that you can adhere to in the long term. I know it’s not as sexy as a diet that promises that you’ll lose a stone in a fortnight. But it’s what works.
